The EMEA (European Medicines Agency) committee on herbal medicinal products called for scientific data to create a Monograph for tea tree oil as a Herbal Medicine in August 2009 More »»
The submission was due on 30th Octiber 2009 and was sucessfully submitted by ATTIA Ltd.
The submission includes
* substance identification/chemical characteristics
* Overview of non-clinical evidence
* Overview of clinical (ie human) evidence
* Copies of literature cited in support of the evidence
Our industry owes a huge debt of thanks to Pat Bolster who coordinated the submission, Miriam McMahon and Reg Lehman from Integria as well as Robert Riedl, who all put in hours (days) of work and effort to ensure that the submission was as complete as it could possibly be in so short a time frame.
The upside of a successful submission which leads to the publication of a Herbal Medicines monograph is that tea tree oil will be recognised in Europe generally as an "official" herbal medicine with claims. It will thus enable individual companies to then apply themselves for product approvals for tea tree oil products as herbal medicines. This would be a huge step forward.
To assist in putting the submission together ATTIA Ltd. engaged the following consultant companies:
* John Issa, Cintox Pty. Ltd. John put together the SCCP dossier
* Tim Felgate - Applied Regulatory Consulting Ltd (UK)
* Dr. Kate Hammer University of WA to undertake a literature search
