Save Tea Tree: A New Global Campaign to Protect Tea Tree Oil

The global tea tree industry has launched SaveTeaTree.com, a new public campaign designed to build awareness and support for the fight to protect continued access to Tea Tree Oil.

The campaign comes at an important time for the industry.

As we have reported previously, the European Union is considering classifying Tea Tree Oil as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant. While the proposed classification has not yet been formally adopted, if it proceeds it could significantly restrict the use of Tea Tree Oil in cosmetics and personal care products in Europe, with potential consequences extending well beyond the EU.

ATTIA is helping lead the response on behalf of the Australian industry, working alongside the international Tea Tree Task Force and a growing network of industry, scientific, legal and government stakeholders.

Much of that work is necessarily technical. Save Tea Tree has been created to take the issue beyond regulatory and industry circles and explain, in clear and accessible terms, why this matters to everyone who uses, sells, formulates with or simply values Tea Tree Oil and other natural products.

Making a complex issue easier to understand

At the centre of the campaign is a simple principle: hazard does not always reflect real-world risk.

The EU classification process is considering evidence generated under laboratory conditions that differ significantly from how people encounter Tea Tree Oil in everyday products.

Save Tea Tree explains this distinction in accessible language, while providing deeper scientific and regulatory information for those who want to understand the issue in more detail.

It also explores what a severe classification could mean for consumers, brands, manufacturers, farmers, small businesses and regional communities around the world.

Importantly, this is no longer simply an Australian industry issue.

Tea Tree Oil is produced, formulated and used globally. Decisions made in Europe can influence product formulations, international markets and regulatory approaches elsewhere. The potential implications also extend beyond Tea Tree Oil to other essential oils and natural ingredients.

That is why the response has increasingly become a global industry collaboration.

Help us take the message beyond our industry

For those already involved in the tea tree industry, the challenge is well understood.

The next step is to ensure that the people who buy and use Tea Tree Oil products understand what is happening and why it matters.

We are therefore asking ATTIA members, customers, suppliers, manufacturers, brands and other industry partners to help us extend the reach of the campaign.

Please direct your customers, business partners, industry contacts and anyone with an interest in Tea Tree Oil or natural products to SaveTeaTree.com.

The site has been specifically designed as a public resource that can be shared with people who may have little or no knowledge of the regulatory process.

The more people who understand what is at stake, the stronger the collective voice behind the campaign.

Add your name and stay informed

Visitors to SaveTeaTree.com can add their name to the campaign and register to receive updates as the regulatory process and industry response progress.

Adding your name helps demonstrate that concern about the future of Tea Tree Oil extends beyond growers and industry organisations to the consumers, businesses and communities that rely on it.

If Tea Tree Oil matters to you, we encourage you to add your support and ask others within your networks to do the same.

Support the campaign

Responding effectively to the proposed classification requires a significant international program of scientific, regulatory, legal and advocacy work.

For those who would like to provide additional support, SaveTeaTree.com also provides the opportunity to contribute financially to the campaign.

Every contribution helps support the work required to protect Tea Tree Oil and strengthen the industry’s response.

A global effort to Save Tea Tree

Important work is already underway across science, regulatory engagement, government advocacy and legal preparation.

Save Tea Tree adds another critical element: a public voice.

This is an opportunity for everyone who values Tea Tree Oil and natural products to understand what is happening, stay informed and stand alongside the global industry as it works to protect their future.

Visit SaveTeaTree.com, add your name, share the campaign with your customers and networks, and help us build the global support needed to Save Tea Tree.
