ATTIA monitors several pests and diseases to protect
100% pure Australian tea tree oil plantations.

Myrtle Rust

  • A fungal rust (Austropuccinia psidii) first identified in Apr 2010 in Gosford, NSW.

  • The CSIRO conducted host testing on 100+ Myrtle species in 2011 finding 95%+ are susceptible, however it has proven to cause minimal impact on production of 100% pure Australian tea tree oil.

  • ATTIA worked closely with Industry & Investment NSW to produce a Biosecurity Manual to control the spread of the pathogen.

Elsinoë Scab

  • A fungus (Elsinoë eelemani), reported for more than 20 years, that causes scabby lesions to develop on infected leaves and stems.

  • Incidence and severity varies between plantations but typically disease develops following periods of persistent or frequent moisture.

  • ATTIA worked closely with producer members to develop an integrated disease management strategy.

Fire Ant

  • A serious pest, originally from South America and first detected in Brisbane in 2001, which have significant social, economic, and environmental ramifications.

  • ATTIA works with the Queensland and NSW Governments on surveillance and movement controls as tea tree mulch is a high-risk carrier.

  • Download Plant Health Australia’s fact sheet on Fire Ants and Tea Tree production.
